Collection: Sonja Sananes ┃ Surrealist Work

Sonja Sananes (Montevideo, 1940 – Borja, Zaragoza, 2001) was a Uruguayan painter and printmaker whose work stands out for its expressionism of intense chromatic force and a marked emotional dimension. Trained in Montevideo, where she studied drawing and began her career in stage design techniques at the National Theatre, she developed a very personal pictorial language focused on the human figure, characterized by vibrant colors, gestural brushstrokes, and highly expressive compositions.

In the early 1990s, she settled in Spain with the artist Glauco Capozzoli, with whom she shared a close artistic collaboration. Together, they founded the Valeriano Bécquer Engraving Workshop, from which they promoted the dissemination and teaching of contemporary engraving techniques. Simultaneously, Sananes continued to develop an intense exhibition activity in Spain and the United States, consolidating a body of work recognized for its technical experimentation, the psychological power of its characters, and a unique visual identity within contemporary Latin American art.
