Collection: Helga Krebs ┃ Contemporary Art

Helga Krebs (Germany, 1928 – Mexico, 2010) was an artist of German origin who settled in Chile and was later exiled to Mexico after the 1973 coup d'état.

Her work spans painting, material experimentation, and the intuitive construction of images. She developed a process-based practice where each piece emerges from successive layers of decision, correction, and transformation, understanding the image not as something static, but as a field of constant possibility.

Material acts in her work as an active agent in the creative process. The pictorial surface becomes a space of tension between accumulation and elimination, gesture and accident, generating works that oscillate between the structured and the unpredictable.

Her language falls within contemporary abstraction without adhering to strictly formalist approaches. She explores memory, time, and the fragility of the image through traces and layers that keep the construction process visible, situating each work between the visible and the hidden.

Throughout her career, she participated in movements and exhibitions linked to the political culture of her time, including her collaboration with the Salvador Allende Solidarity Museum (MSSA) in Chile, as well as exhibitions in Mexico and North America after her exile.
