Collection: Joan Hernández Pijuán ┃ Abstract work
One of the most prominent Spanish painters of the second half of the 20th century, Joan Hernández Pijuan was a key figure in the renewal of Spanish painting in the 1960s. Early in his career, he founded the Sílex Group with Josep Rovira-Brull , Eduard Alcoy , and Carles Planell , eventually becoming its most prominent member.
During this period, his work straddled the line between new figuration and abstraction, characterized by compositions with a strong material presence, gestural brushwork, and a constant exploration of pictorial space. These paintings reflect a key moment in the artist's evolution, preceding his later, more minimalist phase focused on landscape.
Hernández Pijuan's works are part of important international collections and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía .

Biography
Barcelona 1931 – 2005. Joan Hernández Pijuán studied at the Llotja, Barcelona's School of Arts and Crafts, and at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts. He began exhibiting in 1953 with expressionist-style works. In 1956, he founded, along with Eduard Alcoy, Josep María Rovira Brull , and Carles Planell , The Sílex Group . He began to show a preoccupation with volumes, a taste for sobriety, and a clear intention to order the elements. His time in Paris allowed him direct experience with informal art. Upon his return to Barcelona, Joan Hernández Pijuán initiated a new style of action painting characterized by contrasts and violent explosions, with a predominance of blacks and whites. Hernández Pijuán created the sets for a work by José Bergamín and Gustavo Gili, which won the Maribor Prize at the 6th International Print Biennial in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 1965. A year later, he produced lithographs that won an award at the 1st International Print Biennial in Krakow. During this period, his gestural brushstrokes became geometric or anatomical elements, and the artist felt an increasingly strong interest in empty surfaces, in the relationship between space and the objects that surround them.
The 1970s, during which he was awarded a prize at the II International Drawing Biennial in Rijeka, Croatia, marked a progressive period for Hernández Pijuán.
The discovery of new pictorial dimensions through the theme of landscape. The Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona hired him as a professor in 1977, and in 1980 he joined the activities committee of the Miró Foundation in Barcelona. Hernández Pijuán received the Creu de Sant Jordi from the Generalitat of Catalonia in 1985, and in 1989 he became Professor of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, where he was appointed Dean in 1992. The Reina Sofía National Art Centre hosted his exhibition "Spaces of Silence" in 1993, which summarized his work over the previous twenty years. His numerous exhibitions have toured the world.
