From Sala Gaudí to Gaudifond: Over Five Decades Dedicated to Art

 

 

Gaudifond's history began with Sala Gaudí, inaugurated in Barcelona in October 1971 by Salvador Dalí and Gabriel García Márquez. Conceived as much more than an art gallery, it was founded with the mission of integrating plastic arts, literature, music, and contemporary thought into a single space, becoming one of the most innovative cultural projects of its time.

To mark its opening, art critic Carlos Areán described Sala Gaudí as:

 

"the first gallery in Spain to coordinate a wide range of cultural activities aimed at fostering better human coexistence."

 

 

True to this philosophy, Sala Gaudí developed an intense cultural program that transcended the mere exhibition of artworks. In addition to its rooms dedicated to contemporary art, it hosted jazz concerts, experimental theater, literary gatherings, engraving workshops, spaces for young artists, and sculptural projects, establishing itself as a true center for the integration of the arts in 1970s Barcelona.

For over three decades, it featured exhibitions by some of the greatest names in modern art, including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Hans Hartung, Man Ray, and Henri Matisse. Concurrently, prominent figures of international culture such as Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Rafael Alberti, and Julio Cortázar passed through its spaces, making the gallery a meeting point for artists, writers, and intellectuals.

Sala Gaudí's international prominence was reflected in its participation in several consecutive editions of Art Basel starting in 1976, one of the world's most important art fairs, thus solidifying its presence in the international art scene.

 

The Legacy Continues: Gaudifond

 

More than five decades later, this legacy lives on in Gaudifond.

Over the years, the gallery has amassed a collection of over 5,000 original artworks, the result of decades of research, collaboration, and careful selection. The collection stands out particularly for its specialization in modern Spanish art, with a significant representation of Catalan art, an extensive collection of Aragonese art, and a carefully curated selection of Latin American art, forming a unique identity that distinguishes Gaudifond.

Some works from the collection have been featured in major exhibitions and museum projects. Notable among these is the incorporation of a sculpture by Francesc Anglès into the permanent collection of the Dalí Museum in Figueres in 1979, at the request of Salvador Dalí himself, as well as the gallery's collaboration in various exhibition initiatives dedicated to contemporary sculpture.

After three generations dedicated to the art world, the family project has evolved into a gallery that combines over five decades of experience with the possibilities of the digital environment. With branches in Barcelona and Zaragoza, Gaudifond primarily operates as an online gallery, offering international access to a curated selection of original works, all with certificates of authenticity and close, personalized advice for collectors, institutions, and art lovers.
