Biography

Gervasio Gallardo was born in 1934 in Barcelona. He worked for several Spanish advertising agencies before moving to Munich in 1959. He spent the next four years at the prestigious Delpiré Publicité agency in Paris before traveling to the United States in 1963.

In 1969 Gervasio Gallardo was commissioned by Ballantine Books to create the cover for their series Ballantine Adult Fantasy . He then went on to become the most prolific of the artists, creating a total of twenty-nine covers, in addition to at least eighteen for books by famous science fiction authors such as Lovecraft, Beagle, Chesterton, Dunsany or Crawford, winning more than twenty awards.

While there are surrealists like Dalí or Ernst , or magic realists like De Chirico or Miró (and, in writing, García Márquez , Rulfo, or Borges), few have blended the dreamlike with the everyday as Gervasio Gallardo has: objects, landscapes, animals, and fruits depicted in their most minute details, bordering on hyperrealism. Gallardo's subtle painting adds a burlesque, satirical, reflective, and often socially critical element that seems to gently guide the viewer inward, inviting them to find their own meaning in a world of inexhaustible ideas: the one that surrounds us.
